Purposeful engagement: Improving the effectiveness of your campus-wide library committee Within the academic governance structure of many colleges and universities, there exists a campus-wide committee devoted to the library. The responsibilities of these committees vary depending on the shared decision-making culture of the institution, but most are unique because they oversee a single academic unit rather than specific areas of faculty rights and responsibilities or the operations of a large administrative division. https://lnkd.in/gQxrbFx8 #academiclibraries #academics #informationliteracy #librarians #librariestransform #librarians #committees #engagement #libraries

This week (October 1-7) is Banned Books Week! The main purpose of Banned Books Week is to raise awareness about censorship and the challenges that books and other materials face in being restricted or banned in schools, libraries, and communities across the United States and in some other countries. The goal of Banned Books Week is to encourage open-mindedness, freedom of expression, and the importance of preserving diverse voices and perspectives in literature. It also serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to protect and defend the First Amendment rights in the United States, including the freedom to read without censorship. Working with the support of organizations such as the American Library Association, we need to do all that we can to support and advocate for libraries, schools, and the freedom to read. #Pcma #PcmaGMC #BannedBooksWeek #FreedomtoRead #IntellectualFreedom

#libraries #education #dystopian #houstontx I am sorry... what?! By removing libraries and turning them into discipline centers you are actually perpetuating the cycle of ignorance which leads to more, not less, crime and violence. A better way to improve lives is to educate and foster understanding, which means strengthening your educational institutions including libraries, not establishing an Orwellian Thought Police. https://lnkd.in/gsKB-KDb

As a librarian by training, I stand united with Ms. Neujahr and all my colleagues on the front lines (which public libraries have become!!), championing the role of libraries in creating/maintaining an informed and open society. Libraries are crucial for ensuring that every individual has the freedom to think, explore, learn, and flourish. It's inevitable that everything on our library shelves may not resonate with everyone - and that's okay. The libraries' inclusivity lies in their ability to offer diverse perspectives without imposing *anything* on *anyone.* We must maintain their status as hubs of free, inclusive access to knowledge. #LibrariesForAll, #FreedomOfInformation, and #InclusivityInKnowledge
Last year, more than 150 bills in 35 states aimed to restrict access to library materials, and to punish library workers who do not comply.
